Just a few days ago, my wife and our kids returned home to Oklahoma City for Christmas. While going on an "adventure" to a park just down the street from my mother's house, My 2 and a half year old son Graham and I found some 3-day-old snow barely there due to the polite shade and so of course...we ran and played in it. While doing so, I saw snow prints of our shoes directly next to each other and couldn't help but stop (take a picture - obviously) and be reminded of the powerful and often overwhelming fact that 'I am this little guy's father.' He will follow my lead, do what i do, say what i say. And in a significant way, he will be (or have to recieve counseling) a lot of who i am.
But almost as quickly as i felt overwhelmed by being a father, I am reminded of the one thing that makes it all worth it (besides getting to play with legos and hot wheels again). There is no greater opportunity and no greater priveledge than being a father - blazing a trail, showing the way and taking some on an "adventure" called 'life'. How cool is that!
